Euthanasia protocol for the province of Alicante
People who want to request euthanasia and assisted dying in the province of Alicante, must follow a number of procedures. Thuiszorg Alicante is ready to guide you during the entire application process and beyond. These procedures, which will last between 30 and 40 days under optimal conditions, are intended to verify that the request is personal, determined, voluntary and in accordance with the provisions of the Euthanasia Law (LORE March 18, 2021).

To request euthanasia and assisted death, the patient must have a serious or incurable disease, and this disease must be irreversible and cause unbearable suffering. The patient must also be well-informed about his or her health status, the available treatment options and the consequences of euthanasia.
You will also have to register an advance directive. In your advance directive you can define the preferred treatments and the treatments you want to refuse in the event of irreversible deterioration of health and reduced decision-making capacity. To register your advance directive, appointments can be scheduled at the Patient Care Service (Servicio de Atención al Paciente) of any public hospital in the province of Alicante. Euthanasia is only possible if this is explicitly stated in this document. You will need two witnesses for this, people without familial or property ties to you and who can confirm your autonomous decision-making process and mental competence. These two people will have to provide photocopies of their ID.
Another option is to appoint a representative. Their responsibility is to advocate your wishes to the medical panel. When these conditions are met, the patient can submit a euthanasia request to a doctor. The doctor assesses whether the request meets the legal standards. If this is eligible, consultation with a second doctor will follow. With the consent of both doctors, the euthanasia procedure is started.
